Equine

From family ponies to competition and breeding stock, our equine service provides attentive veterinary care on the yard and at the clinic. Sport horse and breeding enterprises are well represented across North Cork and South Limerick, and our vets are used to working around training, competition and covering schedules rather than against them.

Horses are prone to problems that turn serious quickly, so access matters as much as expertise. We provide emergency cover around the clock, and being based locally means a vet can be with you fast when something goes wrong.

24 Hour Veterinary Care

We provide emergency veterinary cover day and night for colic, wounds and lacerations, sudden severe lameness, eye injuries, choke, and foaling difficulties.

With colic in particular, early assessment makes a real difference to the outcome, and we would always rather be called out to a horse that turns out to be fine than be called too late to one that is not. If you are unsure whether a situation is an emergency, ring us and we will talk it through with you.

Vaccinations and Passports

Vaccination records are both a health matter and a paperwork matter, and for competition horses the paperwork has to be exactly right. We provide influenza and tetanus vaccination programmes, kept correctly in date and correctly recorded so that your horse is eligible to compete and to travel.

We also carry out passport identification, silhouettes and microchipping, and we are happy to review a yard's vaccination status as a whole and set up a schedule that keeps everything in date without last-minute panics before an event.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is central to two very different parts of our equine work.

For breeding, we provide reproductive scanning through the season: following mares, timing covering or insemination, confirming pregnancy, checking for twins early enough to act, and monitoring problem mares. Accurate, well-timed scanning is what turns a covering plan into a foal on the ground.

For performance and injury, ultrasound allows us to assess tendon and ligament damage, soft tissue swellings and other injuries. Knowing the extent of the damage is what makes a realistic rehabilitation plan possible, and it is far better to know at the start than to find out three months into the wrong programme.

Blood Testing

Blood testing tells us what is going on beneath the surface. We carry out routine and pre-purchase bloods, screening for anaemia and infection, and testing to investigate poor performance, weight loss, recurring illness or a horse that simply is not right.

Testing is also useful for monitoring - checking that a horse in work is holding condition, or that a horse recovering from illness is genuinely back to normal before returning to full training.

Working With Your Yard

Most of our equine work is done where the horses are. We visit yards, studs and private stables throughout North Cork and South Limerick, and we are happy to plan visits so that vaccinations, scanning and routine checks for several horses are covered together.

If you are managing a yard, we can help you set up a straightforward routine for vaccinations, worming and health monitoring, so that nothing falls through the cracks during a busy season.

To arrange a yard visit, book a vaccination, or discuss your mare's breeding season, call 022-41681 and we will get a vet out to you.
