Farm Animal Veterinary Services

Farming does not run to office hours, and neither do we. Our farm animal service supports dairy, beef and sheep enterprises across North Cork and South Limerick with practical, on-farm veterinary care - from routine testing and scanning through to round-the-clock emergency cover.

We have worked alongside farmers in this area since 2013, and in that time we have learned that good veterinary care is not only about treating sick animals. It is about keeping healthy animals healthy: preventing disease before it takes hold, getting cows back in calf on time, and giving every calf a start that pays back later in the herd.

Our vets know the ground here, the systems people are running, and the pressures of a calving season or a tight breeding window. When you call us, you are speaking to someone who understands what is happening on your yard.

24 Hour Veterinary Care

Emergencies rarely arrive at a convenient hour. Our team provides emergency cover day and night, every day of the year, for calvings and difficult births, downer cows, bloat, milk fever, prolapses, injuries and sudden unexplained illness.

One call brings a vet who knows your herd and your history. Speed matters in an emergency, and being locally based across Buttevant, Mallow and Charleville means we can be with you quickly when it counts.

TB Testing

Herd testing is a legal requirement and a significant interruption to the working week, so we aim to make it as smooth as possible. We carry out full herd TB testing efficiently and on schedule, working with your handling facilities and around your milking or feeding routine.

We are happy to plan testing dates well in advance so you can organise labour and yard work around them, and we will talk you through the results, what they mean and what happens next.

Fertility Testing

Fertility is where herd performance is won or lost. We provide bull breeding soundness examinations before the breeding season, so you find out that a bull is not fit for purpose before he costs you six weeks of calving spread rather than after.

For cows, we investigate individual problem animals and whole-herd fertility patterns - cows not showing heat, repeat breeders, retained cleanings, uterine infections and poor conception rates - and work with you on the nutrition, management and treatment changes that will shift the numbers.

Pre-Breeding and Pregnancy Scanning

On-farm ultrasound scanning gives you accurate information early, when you can still act on it. Pre-breeding scanning identifies cows that are not cycling or that have uterine problems, so they can be treated in time to go in calf with the rest of the herd.

Pregnancy scanning confirms which cows are in calf, stages how far along they are, and identifies empties early enough to make a sensible decision about them. Accurate stage information also lets you plan drying off, feeding and calving groups with confidence.

Herd Health Programmes

A herd health programme replaces reacting to problems with planning against them. We work with you to build a written plan for the year covering vaccination, parasite control, biosecurity, mineral and trace element status, and disease screening and monitoring.

Every farm is different, so every plan is different. We start from your system, your existing disease history and what you are trying to achieve - whether that is tightening calving spread, cutting antibiotic use, reducing mortality or preparing for expansion - and review the plan with you as the year goes on.

Calf Health and Management

The first weeks of a calf's life shape its performance for the rest of its time in the herd. We advise on colostrum management and testing, hygiene at calving, housing and ventilation, feeding and weaning, and the prevention and treatment of scour and pneumonia - the two problems that cost calf-rearing enterprises most.

Where calf health issues are persistent, we investigate properly: sampling, post-mortem examination where appropriate, and an honest look at housing and management, so the fix addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
