Small Animal

Your pet is part of the family, and we treat them that way. Our small animal service cares for dogs, cats and other companion animals at every stage of life - from a first puppy or kitten visit, through vaccinations, neutering and dental care, to the closer attention that older pets need.

Our clinics are equipped with an in-house laboratory, ultrasound and x-ray, which means that in most cases we can examine, investigate, diagnose and begin treatment in a single visit. You are not sent home to wait days on results while worrying about what they might say.

Just as importantly, we take the time to explain. You will always know what we have found, what the options are, what each one involves, and what we would recommend - so that decisions about your pet are made together.

Consultations and Preventive Care

Most of what we do is preventive, and most problems are cheaper, easier and kinder to deal with early. Our consultations are unhurried: a full clinical examination, time to ask questions, and a clear plan you understand before you leave.

We provide full puppy and kitten vaccination courses and annual boosters, protecting against the infectious diseases we see in this area, along with parasite control advice for worms, fleas and ticks, and microchipping. Annual health checks are also the point at which we pick up the early signs of dental disease, heart murmurs, lumps, weight problems and arthritis - often well before an owner would notice anything wrong at home.

Medical and Surgical Consultation

When a pet is unwell, the priority is finding out why. We work through symptoms methodically, using clinical examination alongside our on-site laboratory and imaging, and we discuss findings with you as we go rather than at the end.

Where treatment or surgery is needed, we will explain what is involved, what the recovery looks like and what it will cost, before anything is agreed. There are usually options, and the right one depends on your pet, your circumstances and your wishes.

Routine Surgical Procedures

We carry out neutering, lump removals, wound repairs and other routine day procedures at our clinics. Every patient is individually assessed before anaesthesia, monitored throughout the procedure, and given pain relief as standard both during and after surgery.

Pets are usually admitted in the morning and home the same day. You will get a call to let you know how the procedure went, clear written aftercare instructions, and a follow-up check to make sure healing is on track.

Dental Care

Dental disease is one of the most common problems we see in dogs and cats, and one of the most under-treated. Bad breath is not just an inconvenience - it is usually a sign of infection and pain that a pet will quietly tolerate for years.

We provide dental examinations, scaling and polishing under anaesthetic, and extractions where teeth cannot be saved, along with advice on brushing, diet and dental products to slow the return of disease. Owners very often tell us afterwards that their pet is brighter, eating better and more like their old self.

In House Laboratory

Our in-house laboratory allows us to run blood, urine and other samples on site, with results back in minutes rather than days. That matters most in two situations: when a pet is seriously ill and treatment cannot wait, and when a pre-anaesthetic check is needed before surgery.

It also makes routine monitoring straightforward - checking kidney and liver function in older pets, monitoring ongoing conditions, and confirming that long-term medication is doing what it should.

Ultrasound and X-ray

On-site imaging lets us see what an examination alone cannot. X-ray is invaluable for investigating lameness, fractures, chest and abdominal problems and suspected foreign bodies, while ultrasound gives us a live view of the heart, abdominal organs, bladder and pregnancy.

Because both are available in the practice, we can move from suspicion to diagnosis quickly, in the same visit, without the stress of referral for straightforward cases.

Nurse Consultations

Our veterinary nursing team runs appointments in their own right, and they are often the most useful appointment an owner can book. Nurse consultations cover weight management and nutrition, post-operative checks and dressing changes, nail clipping, dental and brushing advice, puppy and kitten advice, and support for owners of older pets.

They are also an easy, relaxed introduction to the practice for a nervous animal - a visit with no injections and no procedures, which makes the next real appointment considerably less daunting.

Whether it is a new puppy, an annual check-up, or something that has been worrying you for a few days, we are glad to see you. Call 022-41681 to book an appointment in Buttevant, or contact our Mallow or Charleville bases.
